Kathmandu Kailash Overland Tour
The Kathmandu–Kailash Overland Tour begins in Kathmandu and follows the scenic route through Kyirong, a border crossing that was opened after the closure of the Kodari border following the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake. This relatively new route offers travelers a fresh and spectacular journey from Nepal into Tibet.
The drive passes through the beautiful Langtang National Park, one of Nepal’s most famous trekking regions, known for its alpine forests, mountain landscapes, and rich biodiversity. As the journey continues northward, travelers gradually enter the vast Tibetan Plateau, where the scenery opens into wide horizons and dramatic high-altitude landscapes. The overland tour not only offers breathtaking views but also provides an opportunity to experience Tibetan culture and heritage along the route. The drive across the plateau is both scenic and memorable, giving travelers a sense of the immense beauty and spiritual atmosphere of the Himalayan region.
Mount Kailash
Mount Kailash (6,714 m) is one of the most revered and mysterious mountains in the world. Located in western Tibet, this sacred peak has been an object of devotion for thousands of years and holds spiritual significance for four major religions. In Hinduism, it is believed to be the divine abode of Lord Shiva. In Tibetan Buddhism, it is associated with the deity Demchok (Chakrasamvara), a powerful tantric figure. For followers of Jainism, the mountain is sacred as the place where their first spiritual teacher attained liberation. In the ancient Bon tradition of Tibet, Mount Kailash is revered as the sacred nine-story Swastika Mountain where the founder Shenrab is believed to have descended from heaven.Lake Manasarovar
At the foot of Mount Kailash lies the sacred Lake Manasarovar (4,560 m), one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world and an important pilgrimage destination. According to Hindu belief, taking a ritual bath in its holy waters can lead a pilgrim toward spiritual purification and the paradise of Brahma. Drinking its water is believed to cleanse the sins accumulated over many lifetimes.
The Kailash Kora, a sacred 53-kilometer circumambulation around Mount Kailash, is considered one of the holiest pilgrimages in Tibet. Pilgrims and travelers from across the world undertake this spiritual journey. It is widely believed that completing one circuit (parikrama) removes the sins of a lifetime, while completing 108 circumambulations leads to ultimate spiritual liberation or nirvana.
