Upper Dolpo Upper Mustang trek is an adventure and a complete immersion in to the land of Bon and Buddhism. Both Upper Dolpo an Upper Mustang is blessed by great magician ‘Guru Rinpoche’ and Tibetan Buddhism and Bon is thriving since many years. Once it was the under the rule of Ngari kingdom a now it is bordering with Tibetan Autonomous Region of Republic of China. These treks are delightful combined trek of Upper Dolpo Trek and Upper Mustang Trek.
There are two routes to accomplish this trans-himalayan journey ‘Upper Dolpo Upper Mustang trek’, one goes to Lomanthang via Kekyap La pass and another goes to Ghemi via Ghemi La pass.
Both of these routes Upper Dolpo Upper Mustang Trek via Kekyap La pass to Lomanthang and Upper Dolpo Upper Mustang Trek via Ghemi La Pass to Ghemi is similar route up to Nekhem Khola. After Nekhem Khola Upper Dolpo Upper Mustang Trek via Ghemi La pass leads to right-hand side and Upper Dolpo Upper Mustang Trek via Kekyap La leads to left-hand side.

This route allows direct access to Lomanthang a formerly capital of Mustang.
In this route we can use animals (Mules/Horses/Yaks) for carrying loads.
Crossing Kekyap La pass 5700m.
This route enters to Ghemi then to Lomanthang a formerly capital of Mustang.
In this route we cannot use animals (Mules/Horses/Yaks) for carrying loads, hence porter is compulsory.

Upper Dolpo Upper Mustang Trek via Ghemi La pass
Upper Dolpo Upper Mustang Trek via Kekyap la Pass begin after scenic flight to Juphal and following river gorges and forested jungle reach at magical Phoksundo Lake. From here taking the western shore of Phoksundo Lake to forest camp and then following Tuk Kyaksa Khola and crossing Kang La pass leads to Shey Gompa.
From Shey Gompa there are two routes one goes to Bhijer via Samling Bon Gompa then crossing Neng La pass descend to Karang village or Saldang. And another goes crossing Se La pass via Namgang Gompa to Saldang.
From one may can do further northern loop through Nisal Villaga/Yangjer Gompa, last remote Musi village then passing Musi La to Shimen. Another route goes directly via Komas village to Shimen village.
Beyond Shimen the trail rolling in the Panzang river valley’s villages Phalwa and Tinje further connects Chharka village through Upper Panzang valley and Mo La pass.
After Chharka village, the trek passes through wilder route for few days gaining significant altitude and crossing Ghemi La pass descend to Ghemi. From Ghemi we trek to Lomanthang and we visit the sky caves, and ancient monasteries and descend to Jomsom.

Access and exit points of Trek
- Access point for both treks is Juphal, a small airstrip of Dolpa which is in Lower Dolpo.
- Exit point for both treks is Jomsom of Mustang district.
Level of Participant
- This trekking trip is a bit longer which will be FIVE weeks-long journeys in the thin air and a good level of fitness is needed for this trip.
- This is a journey to the high frontier wilderness and a good dose of patience, tolerance and humor are needed.
