Dolpo was abandoned and no foreigners were allowed to go to Dolpo before 1989. But, as the tour operators requested the Government allowed the area for trekking, the Government opened Lower and Upper Dolpo to foreigners, with restrictions. As it is restricted region you need Dolpo trekking permits to enter in the Dolpo region. In terms Dolpo trekking permit, Dolpo is divided in two parts such as Lower Dolpo trek permit and Upper Dolpo trek permit. Basically Lower Dolpo trek permit is required in lower Dolpo trekking and Upper Dolpo trekking permit is required during Upper Dolpo trekking.

Both lower Dolpo trekking permit and Upper Dolpo trekking permit are issued only through the registered trekking agency. That is why while doing the Dolpo treks in Nepal, you have to go through registered trekking agency.

How much Dolpo Trekking permit cost?

As already mention above that the Dolpo treks in Nepal need Dolpo trekking permits. You may also curious to know that how much it costs for Dolpo trekking permit.

Lower Dolpo trekking permit cost, US$ 20 per week (1st 7 days) and US$ 5 per day person. For example if you are doing two weeks Lower Dolpo trek then it would cost US$20 for 1st 7 days and (7XUS$ 5) is US$35 rest days and total cost is US$55 for 14 days Lower Dolpo trek.

Upper Dolpo trekking permit cost, US$500 for 1st ten days and US$50 per day per person. For example if you doing 12 days Upper Dolpo trek would cost US$500 for 1st ten day and (US$50X2days) is US$100 and total US$1100.

How to get Dolpo trekking permit?

Dolpo is restricted region and trekking in Dolpo region you must go through registered trekking agency. Almost all the Dolpo treks are camping package. Moreover, there must two person at least while trekking in Dolpo. If you are single person then is it note possible to get Dolpo trekking permit. When booked your Dolpo Trekking trip with your any registered trekking agency then they will issued your Dolpo trekking permit. Getting Dolpo trekking permit, you agency will asked you for your original passport with valid visa and a passport size photo. Once you hand over the passport and a PP size photo to your agency then they will fill up the online form and go to The Immigration Department Office which remains open form Sunday to Friday from 10 am to 5 Pm. Once documents are submitted then Dolpo trek permit should be ready within 2-3 hours.

Areas of Lower Dolpo & Upper Dolpo (Dolpo Trekking Route)

Dolpa or Dolpo is divided in 8 local level municipalities. Five municipalities, such as; Mudkechula Rural Municipality, Jagdulla Rural Municipality, Tripurakot Municipality, Thuli Bhari Municipality and Kaike Rural Municipality are in Lower Dolpo area. Two wards (Ward no. 8 & 9 ) of Shey Phoksundo Rural Municipality and Three wards (ward no. 1,2 &3) of Dolpo Buddha Rural Municipality are also in Lower Dolpo region.Trekking in these region need lower Dolpo trekking permit.

Three rural municipalities, Shey Phoksundo Rural Municipality, Dolpo Buddha Rural Municipality and Chharka Tangsong Rural Municipality are in Upper Dolpo region and trekking in these Upper Dolpo region needs Upper Dolpo trekking permit.
