Tour Details

Api Nampa Tinkar valley trek is a rarely trekked region in the last northwest corner of Nepal. The least known Api Nampa (7,132m) marks the last giant peak up-thrust of the in far west corner Nepal Himalaya. Mt. Api is highest mountain in the fare west region of Nepal located in Darchula district of Nepal. Tinkar valley is the last remote village located in the northern edge of Darchula district.

It is traversed by three main valleys created by tributaries of Mahakali Nandi: Tinkar Khola, Nampa Khola, and Api Khola. The valley of Tinkar Khola connects the village of Gaga to Tibet at Tinkar La (a 5258m pass), via the village of Tinkar. This valley used to be a major trade route, but after its occupation of Tibet the Chinese government has closed the crossing of Tinkar La. As a consequence, the former trail is barely maintained and over the years has been damaged in many places. Ironically, local people still provide some minimal maintenance in order to access high-altitude pastures where they can collect yarchagumba. Incredibly beautiful old merchant houses in Gaga and Tinkar, and remarkably well-engineered sections of the trail in the Mahakali and Tinkar valleys are testimonies of a time when trade across this region was thriving.

Our journey kicks off after flying to the far west Tarai (Dhangadi) and driving along the plains of Terai to steep hills of Darchula. Leaving the road behind we gradually pass through the country side to rougher and steeper arable areas of remote high middle hills with glimpses of the Himalayan giants, friendly villages greetings Namaste!….

From Darchula beside the Mahakali River where you walk on the Nepal side at all times. The trail stretches through a long and fascinating the rustic villages, pristine forest and picturesque farmland. After passing through the villages of the Brahmins and Chetries, and leaving the deep gorges of the Mahakali River behind, trail leads to open green valleys of Changru and Gaga. From here, following the Tinkar River all the way up to the Tinkar village. It is the last settlement frontier village in Nepal. From here we head up to reach the western basecamp for Api Himal, located at around 4,500m in a beautiful high pristine valley with at basin of Api River. This is rewarding of this entire jounery, Exploring above this camp is a truly magical experience.
